Ellerker's Roman Road would go from 30mph to 50mph, comments by 22 September. Object to the A164 and A165 by 10 September, the B1230 by 17 September.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has published six separate speed limit measures in eight days. Four are still open to comment, on three different deadlines. One is already in force. One is temporary.

The sharpest change is the smallest. On Thursday 27 August the council said it proposes to take Roman Road at Ellerker from 30mph to 50mph at its southern end and 40mph at its northern end. Comments close on 22 September. (statutory notice, 27 August 2026)

The largest is also from Thursday. The council proposes a 50mph limit on 7,505 metres of the B1230 between Howden and Gilberdyke, about four and a half miles, plus short lengths of three side roads that join it. Objections close on 17 September, quoting reference TMN2608. (statutory notice, 27 August 2026)

Two more close a week earlier still, on 10 September.

The four you can still object to

The B1230, Howden to Gilberdyke. A 50mph limit over 7,505 metres, running from a point 54 metres southeast of the Longs Corner roundabout to a point 174 metres west of Sandholme Road. Three side roads get the same limit for their first few metres: Long Lane at Eastrington (38 metres), Dick Lane at Balkholme (23 metres) and Greenoak Lane at Gilberdyke (54 metres, including the eastern slip road). Roman Road, Ellerker. The one notice that says what the limit is now. The council proposes to change it from 30mph to 50mph at the southern extent and 40mph at the northern extent. The notice gives no distances and no reference number. Comments go to traffic.consultation@eastriding.gov.uk or to Civil Engineering Services at County Hall, Beverley, HU17 9BA, by 22 September.

It proposes 40mph on two lengths:

  • 263 metres of the A1079 through Jock’s Lodge roundabout, from 136 metres west of the centre to 127 metres east of it
  • 243 metres of the A164 through the same roundabout, from 99 metres north of the centre to 144 metres south

And 50mph on five lengths:

  • 630 metres of the new unnamed road, from 50 metres south of Regiment Roundabout
  • 880 metres and 890 metres on the left and right branches of the new road, each running from 120 metres south of Jock’s Lodge roundabout to 150 metres south of the Bentley junction
  • 1,290 metres of the A164 south of the Victoria Road junction
  • 3,780 metres of the A164 Skidby bypass, from 150 metres south of the Bentley junction to 43 metres north of Castle Hill roundabout

The A165 Scarborough Road, Bridlington. A 50mph limit over 3,393 metres north of the town, from 30 metres north of the Aldershot Drive roundabout to 159 metres northwest of Grindale Road. The notice also revokes the council’s 2007 30mph order for Scarborough Road “for its entire extents”. Reference TMN2560, objections by 10 September. (statutory notice, 20 August 2026)

What the notices do not tell you

Roman Road aside, none of them says whether the limit drivers actually face today is higher or lower than the one proposed. That answer sits in the council’s statement of reasons, and the three formal notices each put those documents somewhere you have to walk to:

  • B1230: Goole Customer Service Centre, inside Goole Library, Carlisle Street, DN14 5DS
  • Beverley roads: Beverley Customer Service Centre, Champney Treasure House, Champney Road, HU17 8HE
  • A165: Bridlington Customer Service Centre, Town Hall, Quay Road, YO16 4LP

Each of those three says a copy of the street notice and drawing has also been placed on the council’s website. We could not reach that page on 27 August, so we are not describing the A164, A165 or B1230 proposals as a rise or a cut. What is set out above is what the notices themselves say. The Roman Road notice is different: it states the current 30mph outright, so that one is on the record as an increase.

The one already decided

Sancton Road, Market Weighton. The council made a 40mph order on 26 August, operative the same day, covering 580 metres of Sancton Road, the A1034, running southeast from a point 37 metres from the southern kerbline of Wold Road. That one is not open to objection. The only route now is a High Court challenge on the grounds that the order was outside the council’s powers, within six weeks of 26 August. And one that is only temporary

Garrowby Hill and South Wold, Bishop Wilton. The council has made a temporary 40mph order for roadworks there. It starts on 14 September and the council expects the work to take 12 days. The order itself runs for up to 18 months or until the work is finished, whichever comes first. (statutory notice, 26 August 2026)

What it means for you

If you drive the A164 between Beverley and Cottingham, the B1230 between Howden and Gilberdyke, or the coast road north of Bridlington, these are the limits you will be living with, and the window to say anything about them is short.

  • Objecting is free and it is by email. Send it to traffic.consultation@eastriding.gov.uk, or write to Traffic and Parking Services, Beverley Depot, Annie Reed Road, Beverley, HU17 0LF. Quote the reference: TMN2608 for the B1230, TMS2328/2 for the Beverley roads, TMN2560 for the A165. Roman Road has no reference, and its address is Civil Engineering Services at County Hall.
  • You must state your grounds. The three formal notices require an objection to say why. A bare “I object” is not one.
  • The deadlines are 10 September for the Beverley roads and the A165, 17 September for the B1230 and 22 September for Roman Road.
