Two East Riding venues were rated 0 this summer, in Bubwith and Ottringham, and six got a 1 or 2. Another 250 scored a 5. Withernsea has the lowest share of 5s.
Two food businesses in the East Riding were given a hygiene rating of 0 this summer. Six more were rated 1 or 2. Over the same period, 250 places scored the top rating of 5.
The figures cover every rating the Food Standards Agency register records for East Riding of Yorkshire Council from 1 July to 22 September 2026. That is 301 inspections in all. We read the whole register on 1 October. (FSA register, East Riding of Yorkshire)
| Rating | Inspections, 1 July to 22 September |
|---|---|
| 5, very good | 250 |
| 4, good | 24 |
| 3, generally satisfactory | 19 |
| 2, improvement necessary | 3 |
| 1, major improvement necessary | 3 |
| 0, urgent improvement necessary | 2 |
September looks better than it is. A rating of 5 goes on the register as soon as the council uploads it. A rating of 0 to 4 is held back for three to five weeks after the inspection, so the business can appeal. So far September shows 47 fives and a single 3. Lower scores from that month have not had time to appear yet. (Food Standards Agency, guidance for businesses)
The two zeros
Both were inspected in July:
- Cinnamon, 47 Main Street, Bubwith, a restaurant, rated 0 on 14 July
- Zara’s, Keyingham Road, Ottringham, listed as a pub or bar, rated 0 on 30 July
Bubwith is in the far west of the district, about six miles north of Howden. Ottringham is in Holderness, about 11 miles east of Hull.
A 0 means the inspector found urgent improvement was necessary. Only four premises in the whole East Riding hold a 0. The other two were rated in 2025.
The register gives three scores behind each rating: food hygiene, the building, and confidence in management. These are penalty points, so higher is worse. Cinnamon scored 15, 15 and 30. Zara’s scored 20, 15 and 20.
Rated 1 or 2
| Business | Address | Rating | Inspected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baileys Fish and Chips | 21-23 Seaside Road, Withernsea | 1 | 23 July |
| Best Chopsticks | 122 Queen Street, Withernsea | 1 | 11 August |
| Black Swan | 74 Main Street, Brandesburton | 1 | 11 August |
| The Pantry | 47 King Street, Bridlington | 2 | 23 July |
| Spar | 234-236 Quay Road, Bridlington | 2 | 11 August |
| Durham Ox | 48 Norwood, Beverley | 2 | 26 August |
Best Chopsticks has a new rating pending, according to the register. That means it has been inspected again and the new score has not yet been published. None of the eight businesses named here had published a right to reply on the register when we read it.
Withernsea has the lowest share of 5s
Across the district, 2,532 of 2,995 rated premises hold a 5. That is 84.5%. The rest of the register is 106 exempt premises and 95 still awaiting a first inspection.
The picture varies by area. In HU19, Withernsea, 66 of 88 rated premises hold a 5, or 75.0%. That is the lowest of the 16 postcode districts with at least 60 rated premises. Withernsea also had a hard August: of seven ratings there that month, five were 3s, one was a 4 and one was a 1.
Stamford Bridge (YO41), Pocklington (YO42) and Cottingham (HU16) come out best, all above 91%.
Some ratings are old. 266 rated premises still carry a rating awarded in 2021 or earlier. Councils inspect low-risk premises less often, so an old 5 is not necessarily a problem. But it does describe the kitchen as it was then.

What it means for you
- Check before you book. Every rating is on the FSA’s ratings site, searchable by name or postcode. The date matters as much as the number.
- A low rating is a snapshot. It describes the day of the inspection. A business can ask for a re-inspection once it has fixed the problems, and it has a right to publish a reply on the register at any time.
- Ratings of 0 to 4 can be appealed within 21 days of the business being told. That is part of why they reach the register weeks after the visit.
- If you have a concern about a food business, report it to East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s food safety team through the FSA’s reporting service.
