No trains or buses in the East Riding on Christmas Day. Boxing Day's bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. What is known about trains, buses and parking.
There will be no trains on Christmas Day, and last year there were no East Yorkshire buses on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day either. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, which changes what runs that week. Train companies publish their Christmas timetables from October; this page will carry them as they appear.
The quick answer
- Christmas Day, Friday 25 December: no National Rail trains anywhere. East Yorkshire ran no buses on Christmas Day or Boxing Day last year.
- Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: trains finish earlier than normal on many routes; last year East Yorkshire’s last buses ran between 7pm and 8pm.
- Monday 28 December is the substitute Boxing Day bank holiday. Train times for that day are not yet confirmed.
Trains: what National Rail has confirmed
National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 page covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. So far it says:
| Date | Trains |
|---|---|
| Thursday 24 December | Services on many routes finish earlier than normal |
| Friday 25 December | No National Rail services |
| Saturday 26 December | Most train companies run no service; a very limited service from a few companies, details to be confirmed |
| Monday 28 December | Substitute Boxing Day bank holiday; services to be confirmed |
| Thursday 31 December | Services on some routes finish earlier than normal |
National Rail says each train company’s Christmas details will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”, including for Northern, TransPennine Express and Hull Trains, which run the trains through the East Riding.
Engineering works on East Riding lines
On 25 September 2026 National Rail’s list of planned engineering notices had no Christmas or New Year entries yet for any station in the East Riding, or for Hull or York. The nearest listed works are in November: work around York and Wakefield on 14 November, Hull Trains changes on Sunday 15 November, TPE work in the York area from 16 November, and a changed 08:57 London King’s Cross to Hull on 22 November.
Last Christmas is worth knowing about. Northern said in December 2025 that there were no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day and that services between Leeds and York were disrupted from 27 December until the end of January by the Transpennine Route Upgrade (Northern, 18 December 2025). Anyone travelling from Hull, Beverley or Bridlington towards Leeds or York after Christmas should check whether the upgrade has more works booked this winter.
Two more dates:
- Northern’s current Hull to Bridlington and Scarborough timetable runs until Saturday 12 December 2026; a new timetable starts on 13 December, so check times after that date again.
- Hull Trains tickets are on sale up to 19 February 2027 on weekdays, so its Christmas trains to and from London can already be booked on the Hull Trains website.
Buses: East Yorkshire’s pattern last Christmas
East Yorkshire buses has not yet published its 2026 festive times. Its 2025 festive guide, published on 28 November 2025, ran like this:
| 2025 | Buses |
|---|---|
| Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 December | Saturday timetables on most routes |
| Wednesday 24 December | Saturday timetables, last buses between 7pm and 8pm |
| Thursday 25 December | No buses |
| Friday 26 December | No buses |
| Saturday 27 December | Normal Saturday timetable |
| Sunday 28 December | Normal Sunday timetable |
| Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 December | Saturday timetables on most routes |
| Wednesday 31 December | Saturday timetables, last buses between 7pm and 8pm |
| Thursday 1 January | No buses |
| Friday 2 January | Saturday timetables on most routes |
In 2026 Christmas Day is a Friday and Boxing Day a Saturday, so the pattern will shift. Expect this year’s guide in late November, as last year.
Christmas parking
Last year East Riding of Yorkshire Council made parking free at weekends in all its car parks from Saturday 29 November to Sunday 21 December 2025, according to its 7 November 2025 bulletin, with legal notices posted at each car park. It also made parking free for Remembrance Sunday. The council has not yet said whether it will repeat the offer in 2026; last year’s announcement came on 7 November.
For Beverley car park prices, opening days and the ones that shut on weekdays, see parking in Beverley. The Beverley Festival of Christmas on Sunday 13 December has its own free park and ride; see our Festival of Christmas page.
Roads
Road closures and roadworks over the holidays go on our East Riding roadworks and travel page, which is updated weekly.
