The 25th Open Art Exhibition is on at Beverley Art Gallery until 17 December: about 100 works by regional artists, free entry, and the work is for sale.

Beverley Art Gallery’s Open Art Exhibition opened on Saturday 26 September. It is the 25th year of the show. About 100 artworks by amateur and professional artists from Yorkshire and the Humber will hang in the gallery until Thursday 17 December.

Entry is free, and visitors can buy the work on show.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which runs the gallery, announced the exhibition on 23 September. Two independent guest selectors chose the works: the art curator and researcher Gill Crawshaw and the photographer Andrew Quinn.

How the show is put together

The rules are on the gallery’s submission page:

  • it is open to artists living in Yorkshire and the Humber
  • each artist may enter one work, in any medium
  • the work must be original and must not have been in a previous Open Art Exhibition
  • the selectors’ decision is final, and the gallery team takes no part in choosing

Prizes for outstanding entries are awarded by the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery, who also support the exhibition.

Buying a picture

The show is also a sale. The council says buyers can collect their artwork from the Champney Treasure House “before Christmas”. The gallery takes a 23.5% commission on each sale, so an artist selling a £100 piece receives £76.50.

When to go

The gallery is on the first floor of the Champney Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley, HU17 8HE. The council’s museum site lists these opening times:

Day Opening times
Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.45pm
Saturday 9am to 3.45pm
Sunday and bank holidays Closed

There is a launch on Saturday from 1pm to 3pm. Every artist who submitted is invited to it, whether or not their work was picked.

Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said the free exhibition was “a fantastic way for visitors to explore the huge amount of artistic talent and creativity on display in the East Riding”.

Hannah Willetts, the gallery’s curator, said: “Our selectors had a difficult job this year, and we really appreciate the time and care artists put into submitting their work.”

What it means for you

  • Go on a weekday or a Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays, so the show’s final Saturday is 12 December.
  • Artists whose work was not picked have until 4pm today, Friday 25 September, to collect it from the museums desk on the first floor. The gallery says there is no collection on launch day. If you miss today, email the museums team at museums.th@eastriding.gov.uk.
